An Evening of Enchanting Carnatic Classical Music in New York

Under the auspicious of Ayyappa Seva Sangham chapter of New York an evening of Carnatic music performed by renowned vocalist Pranavam Sankaran Namboodiri on May 22, 2010 was really enchanting.

Dr. Sreedhar Kavil one of the Board Trustees of Ayyappa Seva Sangham Inc. welcomed the audience and briefly explained the goals of the Sangham including the building of a separate shrine for Lord Ayyappa. He was asking for blessings and full cooperation from all devotees both moral and financial.

Sri. Kunnappallil Rajagopal introduced Vocal artist Sri. Sankaran Namboodiri, Smt. Sandhya Sreenath (on Violin) and Sri.Sreenath Bala (on Mridangam) to the audience. In the eighties Sankaran has emerged as a symbol of pure music and now the proud son of Kerala he has attracted music lovers from all over the world by his unparallel classical singing.

Sri. Namboodiri was a child prodigy who has become a very successful traditional professional in the field of Carnatic Music. He started learning music at the age of 10 with Sri. C.S. Narayanan Namboodiri; continued studies under great masters like Sri.T. V. Gopalakrishnan, Prof. Mavelikkara R. Prabhakara Varma and Late Sri. Palghat K. V. Narayana Swamy. Sankaran was the youngest 'A' grade artist with All India Radio. He was honored by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India with a scholarship and a Junior Fellowship from Cultural Department. Sankaran was also a lecturer of music at the Teacher's College of Music under the Madras Music Academy and at the Swathi Kalakendra in Kozhikode, Kerala. Sankaran has traveled and performed in various countries such as Australia, U.K, France, Germany, Holland, Kenya, Kuwait, Qatar, Switzerland, UAE, and the United States of America. Within the short span of 23 years he has received many honors and titles. They include Yuva Kala Bharathi by Bharat Kalachar (Chennai), Ganamrutha Surabhi by Sree Vidya Peetam (Kalladiakurichi, Thiruneveli) He has to his credit several Cassettes and CDs by HMV, Sangeetha, AVM etc.

Sankaran has started his concert by singing "Vathapi…." (Hamsadhwani) and travelled through Janaranjini, Mukhari, Khamas, Mohanam, Charukesi, Kadanakuthoohalam,Hindolam, Kharaharapriya raga (on an Ayyappa Sthuthi) . He concluded his concert by rendering a rare raga Rathipathipriya with a Tillana.

Sankaran's singing was effortless which really showed his musical brilliance. One should be blessed to witness musicians in a zone like this, according to Sri. Rajagopal.

Sri.Sankaran Namboodiri was felicitated with a "Ponnada" by Ayyappa Seva Sangham President Sri. R. B. Rajan . For the benefit of the human soul music is important in one's life and for that one should pratice Brahma upasana and Nada Brahma upasana , Sri. Rajan said.

Ayyappa Seva Sangham General Secretary Sri.Balakrishnan Nair in his vote of thanks thanked Sri. Sankaran Namboodiri and the accompanying artists, the audience and the people who did support this event. He also thanked Sri. Vinod Kearke, Sri. Balan Nair, Sri Raveendran Nair, Sri. Vinayaraj, Sri. Unnikrishna Menon, Sri. M. G. Menon (Washington) Sri. Suresh Panicker, Dr. Madhu Pillai and the Hindu Temple Flushing authorities for their unconditional support to Ayyappa Seva Sangham and to this musical concert.

The audience praised the efforts of Ayyappa Seva Sangham for promoting Indian arts especially arts such as Carnatic Music and declared their support.
