The foremost thing of a pilgrimage to Sabarimala Temple is Irumudikettu (The double-headed baggage in which pilgrims to Sabari hills carry their things and offering to the deity. It is also known as Pallikettu. It has two heads, one at the front and the other at the rear. The fabric used to make Irumudikettu is usually black, red, blue or white in color. The front head comprises coconut filled with ghee, aval (flattened rice), malarpodi (rice fried and powdered), raw rice, jaggery, camphor, kanikka (a gift or an oblation to the deity) offerings, and rose water. It also includes turmeric powder, camphor, malar, pattu (silk cloth) as an offering to Malikappuram. The rear head is comprised of eatables of the pilgrim.
Filling of Irumudikettu is begins with pouring ghee into the holy coconut. What is the importance of Neythenga? Coconut filled with ghee. This coconut or neythenga symbolises Lord Siva and Ghee represents Lord Vishnu, Father and Mother of Lord Ayyappa. The coconut is broken and the ghee is poured out into the ennathoni at Sabarimala (vessel in the shape of canoe). The front portion with three eyes of the coconut is burned in the Aazhi [(blazing fire), in Hindu mythology blazing fire represents Lord Vishnu and the other part is brought back home and used as Prasadam by the pilgrims.
